My work is conceptually focused and can be realized as digital prints, collages, paintings, multiples, neon sculptures, installations, performances as well as many other conventional and/or unusual materials.
My artistic practice is driven by my never-ending fascination with how reality can be perceived, both intellectually as well as physically. This pursuit often involves the use (or lack) of language as a system for communicating concepts and ideas. I often render things useless (either by crossing out, cutting out or painting out information, turning things around to prevent detection or shredding & burning) as a way to reveal something entirely new as a result of that distillation process.
The success of the work results when it functions on multiple levels (including being humorously accessible, curiously poetic, oddly disconcerting and intellectually challenging) allowing for various interpretations by viewers, who despite their different opinions, all could be correct in their perceptions.
The work in this exhibition, Unanticipated Despair (Despite Previous Naïve Optimism), could be about hopes and dreams that have been obscured by a seemingly inevitable dark reality that no longer resembles that which generated the initial enthusiasm. Eventually, the actuality is revealed as less than perfect and the ability to recognize what is real becomes difficult to discern.
There is no perfect world and therefore, it is paramount to keep an objective perspective whenever possible to maintain sanity in trying times. It is seemingly important to maintain an accurate perception of reality (however, that can be achieved) or risk making negligent decisions which could result in unfortunate consequences.
The reality of a real car being chased by the police is psychologically distanced by its live broadcast on TV, for example; whereas an actor portraying exasperation in a movie can apparently incite a desire to do something from those who were previously imperious to action. Death and dire circumstances never seemed more inviting especially when seen in vivid colors.
At this point in my life, I am fascinated by the dichotomy of these seemingly depressing aspects of life that can seriously challenge one’s optimism as well as the necessary steps one has to implement to remain sanguine.
