PRESS RELEASE (PDF)

Quick Response (Within Reason) And No Regrets is Stone’s second solo show at the gallery. In this new body of work, Stone revisits his meditations on “reality perception” and what it means to see in the world of today. Stone has a concentrated fascination with objects, codes and systems that function as containers of meaning to those with the ability to decode them. He has investigated Braille, music, and in this show will take on the now ubiquitous QR code (Quick Response codes are similar to UPC codes but can store much more information.) QR codes and Braille are examples of what Stone calls “exclusive meaning,” wherein the signified is available only to those who can interpret the code. To others the codes form abstract visual patterns. This new show will present a host of works that demonstrate different levels of exclusive and available meanings. Digital prints will include color blind tests where only those who can see all colors will be able to detect the imagery embedded within the picture(s). The exhibition will further include works across different media including neon signage, images from Stone’s social media relationships, and more.

David E Stone is a conceptual artist based in Los Angeles who has been active in the visual arts in California for more than thirty years as an artist, gallerist (Another Year in LA) and curator. Stone’s artistic practice is driven by his fascination with how reality can be perceived, both intellectually and physically. Using materials as diverse as digital prints, paintings, neon sculptures, and installations, Stone’s work ranges from the humorously accessible to the curiously poetic.
