ZONA MACO 2015
February 4 - 8, 2015
Charlie James Gallery is delighted to exhibit a two-person booth by Ramiro Gomez and William Powhida for our presentation at this year’s ZONA MACO. Each year Zona Maco, Latin America’s most important contemporary art fair, brings collectors, specialists and galleries from every part of the world together in Mexico City. Founded by Zélika García in 2002, Zona Maco has established itself as one of the most notable platforms for selling, displaying, and promoting international contemporary art in the region.
For Ramiro Gomez’s Magazine series, Gomez tears out advertisements from upscale design magazines like Luxe, Dwell, and Architectural Digest, and paints domestic workers into the scenes in ways that leverage the subjects and compositions of the ads. Gardeners at work appear in ads with opulent exteriors; bedroom furniture ads are modified to present nannies and children, many such interventions are explored.
Last August, Casa Maauad, a space for artists and curators located in historic San Rafael, welcomed artist William Powhida as a resident. After an investigation of the local contemporary art scene, Powhida created this body of work based on the result of his experiences and impressions of Mexico.
