Charlie James Gallery is proud to announce the acquisition of Nancy Buchanan's Use Value by MOCA Los Angeles.
The gallery wishes to thank Janet Mohle-Boetani for her generous support of Nancy and of MOCA. The gallery also wishes to thank Anna Katz and the MOCA team for their support of Nancy Buchanan and this acquisition.
Since 1988, Nancy Buchanan collaborated with Carolyn Potter to make miniatures incorporating video. Use Value celebrates the local economies of garage sales.
Carolyn, who passed away in February of 2024, was a consummate craftsperson; she could make anything. She earned her MFA at UCLA, in the Weaving Department (where she was classmates with Maren Hassinger). Nancy and she met when Nancy was Artist in Residence at Pasadena Community Access, and Carolyn was an artist teaching workshops at the entity that became the Armory Center for the Arts. Carolyn was largely responsible for designing the structure of the houses; she and Nancy collaborated on all finishing, details and contents. Nancy chose the themes and did all video work.
