EXPO Chicago 2013

William Powhida
EXPO Chicago 2013
Bill by Bill - Solo Presentation

September 19 - 22, 2013

The gallery is delighted to present a solo project with Brooklyn-based artist William Powhida for EXPO CHICAGO 2013. Powhida has been one of the contemporary art world’s foremost practitioners of institutional critique for over a decade. This year Powhida’s work was presented on the front page of the Village Voice; ARTINFO listed his New Museum drawing as one of the top 100 most iconic artworks of the last five years, and he was reviewed in Artforum magazine, the LA Times, New American Paintings, and Installation magazine.

At EXPO CHICAGO Powhida will exhibit from a new body of work that combines installation with his signature trompe l’oeil text paintings. In response to the art fair experience, Powhida has fabricated pieces he considers emblematic of art world tropes that are seen over and over again on the international art fair circuit: Post-minimalist sculptures, large-scale decorative abstractions, shiny object sculptures, ceramics in vitrines, celebrity paintings, etc. Each one of Powhida’s fabricated objects is accompanied by a “certificate painting” that contains a discussion of the trope at hand, descriptions of how the piece was made, as well as more informal opining from Powhida.

Powhida, b. 1976 New York, earned his BFA @ Syracuse University and his MFA from Hunter College. His work has been covered in the New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, the LA Times, the Seattle Times, ARTINFO, the Village Voice and numerous other publications. His work is represented in NY, LA, Seattle and Copenhagen. Collections include the Whitney Museum of American Art, Raymond Learsy and Melva Bucksbaum, John and Amy Phelan, and the DESTE Foundation.
