PULSE NY 2011

March 3-6, 2011

Charlie James Gallery is delighted to be exhibiting at the PULSE NY Contemporary Art Fair for the second consecutive year. The gallery plans an audacious program of sculpture and painting for this year’s fair. At the core of the presentation is a dialogue between Bay Area Iranian-American artists Ala Ebtekar and Taravat Talepasand. We will be showcasing Ala’s paintings on book pages and his Persian female warrior work. Taravat’s extraordinary graphite work will be showcased, as well as one of her pairs of painted shoes. Leavening this dialogue is the sculptural work of Bay Area conceptualist Lizabeth Eva Rossof. We will debut Lizabeth’s large-scale terra cotta warriors and again present her smaller set of warriors. First presented at Liz’s solo show at the gallery in January 2010, her terra cotta warriors, on which sit the heads of western cartoon heroes, have been a sensation at several major art fairs. Liz commissioned the Chinese artisans who make the X’ian replicas to make the custom heads and thereby subvert their own iconography. Rounding out the presentation will be new work by LA sculptor Andrew Lewicki. A product of the Otis College of Art and Design in LA, Andrew was recently acquired by the Frederick R Weisman Foundation. We will present Andrew’s gold bars, made out of melted down gold crayons, his cast iron Oreo manhole cover, and his concrete legos. We will also have works from gallery artists Orly Cogan, Libby Black, and Travis Somerville.
